HIPPOPOTAMUSES

Great gray buses
submerged
in murky waters
pressed down
by African sun

Nostrils
piggy ears
bulgy eyes

risk the burn

No need to move
unless toB E L L O W
from toothy caverns

Near day's end
they lumber
along water's edge
searching for grasses

They snort
grumble
wheeze-honk

a little night music on the river
